ok ok….forget about malaysian subtitles awhile..how bout this…do you guys watch discovery channel or erm…travel asia? It’s so BLOODY annoying that when an Asian speaks ENGLISH, they still have to put the bloody English subtitles there as though our Asian accent is so hard to understand but when a French speak English or an Irish or any white guy speaks English, they don’t have the English subtitles there. What’s with that?

while it may be true that english can contain more wordplay, that does not mean that the translator can be careless. kisah dua belas lautan, come on. did he (translator) even watch the movie?

i’ve watched Hero on both mandarin and english. i swear, it’s so much better in mandarin with english subtitles. not that i understand much mandarin (little here and there), but the english subtitles were simpler and had more depth than the english dubbing. i suppose you can put more words at the bottom than you can fit into the actor’s mouth then.

erm, actually…. in star wars’ literary form (e.g. books, comics etc), r3d2 IS written as Artoo and C3P0 IS referred to as Threepio. Gives them a more human touch i think

yea, i kinda think so too. I watched Jacky Chan’s and Chow Yun Fatt’s movies where they’v spoken Mandarin/Canton and below were the subtitles and true, the translation were kept simple, and if they’ve got idioms or proverbs included they were not directly translated. More like the director made them translated to the original meaning.

you know, here in the states, I’ve watched a few chinese movies; e.g: crouching tiger hidden dragon, hero and shaolin soccer. they never translated or dubbed the movie into english, they only had subtitles that translated the entire movie. so to be fair, the subtitles is just to help the non-english speaking crowd to understand the movie and also, in a way, its to respect the way the director wanted you to see the movie. now, on the other hand, i have to say though, english is a far more developed and evolved language then BM is. there are more subtleties and nuances in english then there is in BM, which is one of the reasons why i think translating something into BM is a bit awkward. just my 2 cents
